How the Payments Work

Worked example (illustrative — every car is priced individually)
Initial payment£1,500
Term — your choice12–36 months
Monthly paymentFrom £500 a month

This is a lease direct with WMA. There is no lender involved, so no credit check applies. You choose the term — anywhere from 12 to 36 months — and the monthly adjusts to match; a shorter term means a higher monthly, and 36months gives the lowest, the “from” figure shown here. The initial payment and monthly figure are set individually for each car — see the vehicle’s own page for its real figures. WMA owns the car throughout the lease — see “What happens at the end of the agreement?” below for how that works.

What if I fall behind on a payment?

A missed payment does not end the agreement straight away. We get in touch first, a £25fee applies if it’s still unpaid, and if it isn’t sorted we send a formal default notice giving you 14 days to put things right — all before the agreement can end for non-payment.

If circumstances change, talk to us before it gets to that point. We would rather agree an arrangement than see an agreement fall through.

Your Questions, Answered

Do you run credit checks?

No. Rent to Own is a lease direct with WMA — there is no lender and no credit check. Whatever has happened in the past makes no difference to whether you can take out an agreement.

What do I need to take out a Rent to Own agreement?

Three things: a full or provisional UK driving licence, proof of address from the last 3 months, and fully comprehensive insurance covering a car leased or rented from a private lease company.

Can I take out an agreement on a provisional licence?

Yes. A full or provisional UK licence both work. International licences are not accepted.

What insurance do I need?

A fully comprehensive policy covering a car leased or rented from a private lease company, where the registered owner and keeper is the lease company. Your insurer will know what this means — if in doubt, call us before you buy the policy and we will talk you through it.

What happens at the end of the agreement?

WMA owns the car throughout the lease — there is no option or promise to buy written into the agreement. Complete your agreement with a clean account and you'll typically be offered the chance to buy the car for £499 afterwards. This is a separate, discretionary offer made once the car is returned, valid for 14 days — never guaranteed, and never part of the lease itself.

Can I end the agreement early?

There's a minimum term (usually 12 months). Ending before then costs 50% of the remaining unpaid monthly payments to the end of the minimum term — the month you've already paid for in advance isn't counted. After the minimum term, you can end the agreement with 28 days' notice and no charge.

What happens if I miss a payment?

It doesn't end the agreement straight away. We'll get in touch, a £25 fee applies if it's still unpaid, and if it isn't sorted we send a formal default notice giving you 14 days to put things right — all before the agreement can end for non-payment. If you're worried about a payment, contact us before it's due — we'd rather agree an arrangement.

How many miles are included?

Your allowance is 1,300 miles for every month you have the car, checked when it comes back. Miles over that are charged at £0.20 each.

Who looks after the car?

It carries WMA's 90-day warranty from handover. After that you're responsible for keeping it road-legal, serviced and repaired — any garage you choose, no tie to WMA. Road tax is yours too: you tax the vehicle directly with the DVLA using the reference number we give you at handover — 12 months, 6 months or monthly Direct Debit, whichever suits. WMA stays the registered keeper and lets you know when it's due.
